THEME MUSIC AND OPENING CREDITS
ACT ONE
FADE IN:
EXT. - CONCERT HALL - NIGHT

An outside shot of people walking toward the front doors of the auditorium. The camera follows as if it was one of the people going to this event.

CUT TO:
INT. - INSIDE FRONT ENTRANCE - CONTINUOUS

The camera gives the usher a ticket. The usher motions his hand for the camera to follow. We follow the usher until he finds the correct seat. Others close by get up stand giving the camera room to get into its seat. The camera moves to the right as it bobs slightly trying to get out of the way of other people behind it; The camera drops its view to signify it has found its seat. A few seconds later, a tall person comes into view from the left of the screen. The person now sits directly in front of the camera’s view and blocks the view of the stage. A finger pokes the person’s back and gestures for the person to move to the left. The person looks over her shoulder and apologetically moves to the next seat to the left.

CUT TO:
INT. - BACKSTAGE - CONTINUOUS

A make-up person puts the finishing touches on the twenty something pop diva. She has two other women surrounding her.

SINGER (Impatiently)

Elena, what time do you have?

Elena anxiously rolls up her sleeve and checks her watch.

SINGER

What is this? As you can see I don’t have all night. I swear if I didn’t save your behind by giving you this job, you’d be still flipping burgers for your pops.

(To the other woman)

Gabrielle! Time!

GABRIELLE

Five minutes to eight.

SINGER

(To Elena)

You see that? Try to remember it when I ask you again. Now get me some water.

Elena scurries out of the room.

MAKE-UP PERSON

Now was it really necessary? They’re assistants not indentured servants.

SINGER

Who are you their guardian angel? Why don’t you stick to putting that stuff on my face and mind your business. Gabrielle, give me my cell!

Gabrielle digs into her pockets, gets the cell phone and gives it to the singer. Elena jogs back into the room with a bottle of water in her hand. Without looking up, the singer takes the bottle out of Elena’s hand; she flips the cell phone lid back down when a large man enters the room. He moves closer to the singer. She grabs on to his arm.

SINGER

Is the situation taken care of?

MAN

I didn’t see him. We all checked.

SINGER

Okay.

(Gets out of her chair)

I’m ready.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUDITORIUM STAGE - MINUTES LATER

Sounds of hands clapping in rhythm help to get the concert started.

P. A. ANNOUNCER

Ladies and Gentlemen. Get your hands together for the number one singer, with the number one album, featuring the number one song in the country! Give it up for Autumn Summers!

The crowd gets on their feet to welcome to their pop star. Autumn comes out with a great smile and walks to the middle of the stage. She blows several kisses out to the audience and waves. Before Autumn grabs the microphone, someone leaps from audience and grabs her from her left side. Autumn looks terrified while the crowd screams uncontrollably. Concert security pulls the masked person off Autumn. She gets back on her feet, then quickly runs off the stage. A few close-up shots give attention to many faces in the audience who look stunned.

CUT TO:
INT. - BACKSTAGE - CONTINUOUS

Autumn runs toward her dressing room.

AUTUMN

Gabrielle! My coat! Elena! My purse!

She continues running with the large man in front of her.

CUT TO:
INT. - BACK EXIT OF AUDITORIUM - CONTINUOUS

Autumn and the man run straight to the limo. The chauffeur is jolted out of his sleep after hearing the back door of the auditorium slam shut. He runs to the back of the limo, opens the door to let Autumn and the man inside. Gabrielle and Elena are racing to get inside the limo. The chauffeur shuts the door, runs to the driver’s seat, starts the engine, and zooms away from the auditorium.

CUT TO:
INT. - BACKSEAT OF LIMO - CONTINUOUS

Gabrielle gives Autumn her coat. Elena gives her the purse, then Autumn turns to the large man.

AUTUMN

(Mocking him)

We have it taken care of. You have it taken care of all right! That nut could have killed me! I didn’t hire bodyguards to help a nut grab me out of nowhere! I hired you guys to prevent it from happening!

BODYGUARD

I’m sorry, Miss Summers. He must have slipped through our fingers.

AUTUMN

Slipped through you’re fingers!? I thought the protection of Lou LaSalle had the thickest fingers in L.A!

GABRIELLE

(Worried)

Are you okay, Autumn?

ELENA

(Also worried)

Did you get hurt? Did you slip and fall?

AUTUMN

No. I’m okay, girls. It’ll take more than that lunatic to stop me.

GABRIELLE

But how do you know he’s involved?

AUTUMN

Because I know. I know how Scott operates.

ELENA

Yeah, she’s right, Gabby.

GABRIELLE

I don’t know.

AUTUMN

Well, I do and he did.

ELENA

We’re gonna need more bodyguards.

AUTUMN

Call LaSalle first thing in the morning.

BODYGUARD

You can’t.

AUTUMN

Why? Is he on vacation again? Does he have to go back to his east coast operations?

BODYGUARD

He’s closing up shop.

AUTUMN

He’s what?

BODYGUARD

He’s going out of business. Got bought by some other agency. What's the name again?

He snaps his fingers in hopes of remembering the name.

AUTUMN

(Sarcastically)

This is perfect! First Scott attacks me, then I have to cancel the show, and now I have no protection!

(She slumps back on the back seat then turns to Elena)

Don’t just sit there! Turn on the radio!

We see a hand reaching for the buttons. It presses one of the pre-selected radio stations, which has the digital read out of the station. Ashford and Simpson’s, “Solid (As A Rock)” begins to play.

INT. - INSIDE MERCEDES - THE NEXT MORNING

The same digital numbers are displayed, but the car stereo is slightly different. “Solid (As A Rock)” continues playing. Another camera angle shows David bopping his head to the tune. He starts to sing with the radio.

DAVID

(Singing)

You didn’t turn away, when the sky went gray

But somehow we manage, we had to stick to-gether.

Ooooh - oooh - ooooh - ooooh

He turns the car into the underground garage and parks it into the reserved parking space.

You didn’t bat an eye, when I made you cry

He gets out of the car, closes it with his hip, locks the door and presses the alarm button. It makes two short beeping noises to the beat of the song.

We knew down the line, we would make it - better

David goes to the elevator, gets in, and presses number 30.

Ooooh - oooh - ooooh - ooooh

The elevator doors close.

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

She sits at her desk while working on her laptop. She sways to the same song on her stereo.

MADDIE

(Singing)

And for love’s sake, each mistake

Oww, you forgave

And soon both of us learned to trust

Not run away...

CUT TO:
INT. - BLUE MOON HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

The elevator doors open. David slings his jacket over his right shoulder and starts walking out still singing.

DAVID

It was no time to play...

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

MADDIE

We build it up...

CUT TO:
INT. - BLUE MOON HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

David is still walking.

DAVID

And build it up...

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

MADDIE

And build it up...

INT. - BLUE MOON OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

David bursts through the front door.

DAVID

And now we’re solid!...

MADDIE (O.S.)

And now we’re solid!...

David stops to see who else is singing. Agnes points to Maddie’s office.

MADDIE (O.S.)

Solid as a rock!...

David puts his finger to his lips to all the employees so they won’t make a sound. He sneaks toward Maddie’s office as she continues singing.

MADDIE (O.S.)

That’s what this love is

That’s what we’ve got

Solid... Solid as a rock

And No-thing’s changed it

The thrill is still...

David opens the door.

DAVID

Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot!

MADDIE

(Startled)

What, what, what, what, what, what, what, what!

DAVID

I heard you playing my song.

She gets up and walks over to turn off the stereo.

DAVID

And signing it too.

(closes door behind him.)

Speaking of singing –

MADDIE

Please don’t.

DAVID

Me speaking?

MADDIE

You singing.

DAVID

Did you hear what happened last night?

MADDIE

How could I not? It has been all over the TV and the newspapers, if I have to listen to another radio update, I’m going to throw it out of the window.

DAVID

Fortunately, for the people below us, these windows don’t open.

MADDIE

Who says I need the windows open?

DAVID

The people who will climb into ambulances after the falling glass shatters their normal way of life, not to mention their normal paychecks.

They hear knocking on the door.

MADDIE

Come in.

Agnes opens the door and walks to Maddie’s desk.

AGNES

Here’s the final papers you and Mr. Addison have to sign, Miss Hayes.

MADDIE

Thanks, Agnes.

AGNES

Mr. Duncan will pick it up tomorrow.

MADDIE

Is that all, Agnes?

AGNES

Yes, Miss Hayes. I’ll see myself out.

DAVID

(In a silly note)

Better to find the door with my dear.

Agnes walks out the door.

DAVID

Funny ain’t it?

MADDIE

No. The joke's pretty dry.

DAVID

No this.

(Holds up the papers Agnes brought in)

Just fifteen short years ago, Lou LaSalle wanted to buy us out only to find us saving him from going under thirteen short years later. If we didn't have to waste two extra years in bankruptcy court, this would have been one of you’re typical overnight success stories.

There’s a huge commotion in the outer office. David goes over to the door and opens it. Maddie and David look at most of their work force begging the attention of a young woman wearing shades and a hat. Her attempts for disguising herself failed miserably.

DAVID

Looks like she may need my assistance.

David calmly walks to the outer office. He then stops short of joining the mob surrounding the woman.

DAVID

Okay, that’s enough...

(No one is listening)

I said that’s enough!

(Still nobody listens; He whistles)

Yo!

Everyone stops in their tracks. As David moves closer to the woman, people move out of his way.

DAVID

You wouldn’t be looking for me, would you?

AUTUMN

I don’t know. Who are you?

DAVID

David Addison at your service. And I know I can service you better if you have a seat in my partner’s office.

David takes the woman’s hand and leads her to Maddie’s office.

AUTUMN

Not without my assistants.

DAVID

(Looking around the room)

And where would they be?

AUTUMN

(Snaps her fingers. They come forward)

Let’s go.

The three women walk past David and enter the office. He shakes his head and turns around to follow them.

MADDIE

David? Is she who I think she is?

DAVID

It depends on who I think you think she is.

AUTUMN

I think I need some aspirin.

ELENA

(Almost jumps out of her seat)

Autumn, do you want me to get some?

AUTUMN

No Elena. It’s okay.

Autumn motions her hand to make Elena sit back down.

DAVID

Can you make her roll over?

MADDIE

I’m sorry, it’s just –

AUTUMN

I know. I get this kind of stuff all the time.

DAVID

Good. I was afraid you didn’t get any of that.

MADDIE

May I just ask if Autumn Summers is your real name?

AUTUMN

Incredible as it sounds, but it's true. Autumn Summers is my real name.

MADDIE

It does sound unique.

DAVID

It also sounds like your folks had their seasons mixed up.

AUTUMN

Does he say things like this all the time?

Maddie nods her head wearily.

AUTUMN

Oh, by the way, these are my assistants Gabrielle and Elena.

Both assistants wave their hands.

MADDIE

How can we help you, Miss Summers?

AUTUMN

I’m guessing you have heard what happened to me last night.

MADDIE

You guessed right.

AUTUMN

Needless to say, I need some protection.

MADDIE

Doesn’t a person of your stature already have protection?

AUTUMN

I did until today.

DAVID

What happened? Your security refused to bark on command?

AUTUMN

The company went out of business.

MADDIE

How awful.

DAVID

Yeah, I bet whoever the snake is who either bought them out, or drove them out, is slithering into their place as we speak.

AUTUMN

You can say that.

MADDIE

You wouldn’t happen to know who drove that poor company out of business, would you?

AUTUMN

Yes.... It was you.

DAVID

Listen, I gotta tell you, I only slither after hours and on weekends.... As for Maddie, she slithers great any time of the day.

MADDIE

I’m so sorry.

AUTUMN

No don’t be. Business is business.

MADDIE

No, I mean for you having to listen to him.

She ;ooks at David. He gives Maddie a boyish smile.

AUTUMN

I need protection from an old business partner of mine, Scott Edwards. You see, when I was starting to make it big, I was advised to set up some businesses on the side. You know, to help me when times get rough.

MADDIE

Then times got rougher than you imagined when you started to apply for bankruptcy.

AUTUMN

How did you know? I never told the press.

MADDIE

Honey, been there, done that.

AUTUMN

You were a singer?

MADDIE

A model.

AUTUMN

Oh yeah, I almost forgot how hectic a model's life can be. Well, not as hectic as traveling the globe days at a time, making pit stops to do one, even two shows a night.

DAVID

It’s rough being a pop icon with millions to burn and many hearts to break... not to mention whips to crack.

He looks at her assistants.

AUTUMN

Anyway, he’s after me because I shut down a previous business venture we were building.

MADDIE

Why?

AUTUMN

He was getting too much into my personal life. Trying to extend our friendship into a relationship. Scott wouldn’t take no for an answer.

DAVID

I hate those kind of guys.

AUTUMN

He’s also wants me to help him get out of debt. He blew the money he made into some ridiculous scheme his stockbroker begged Scott to invest in. He lost his shirt, the stockbroker wants his money and Scott’s stalking me.

MADDIE

We’ll put all our man power we can to get on this case.

DAVID

We would have included our woman power, but you already have that covered.

MADDIE

We’ll look into this stockbroker guy to see what he has on this stalker.

AUTUMN

Thank you... oh, here's the address.

She takes out a piece of paper and a pen from her purse and starts writing. She gives the paper to Maddie.

AUTUMN

Here's where you can locate him. I'm not too familiar with this person's name... or yours.

MADDIE

I’m Maddie Hayes.

AUTUMN

(Her face lights up)

Wait a minute! I know you! You're the Blue Moon girl! My mother loved watching those commercials. You’re still one of her favorite models, next to Cindy Crawford, of course.

MADDIE

(To herself)

Of course.

DAVID

And I’m –

AUTUMN

You already told me.

(Abruptly turns to her assistants)

Let’s go girls.

The three women get up and walk out the door.

DAVID

People say musicians are hard of hearing.

David and Maddie follow Autumn out to the outer office. The employees prepare to run over to Autumn again, but David sticks his hand out to stop them. Autumn continues to lead her assistants to the front door.

DAVID

Whoa, whoa, slow down, Autumn.

(She’s visibly irritated by David)

We can’t let you out of our humble home away from home without your chest protectors...

(Cups his hands and turns to the other detective offices to his left)

O’Neil...! Simmons!

(They come out of their offices. David waves them over to where his is standing)

I’m assigning you two to protect Miss Summers with your lives. You are to be with her at all times. Everywhere she goes, you go, understand?

(They both nod their heads)

Even if you have to take a shower with her, it’s all in the name of guarding her body.

(He looks over at Autumn and she is not amused; Casual tone)

Autumn baby, it’s called a joke.

AUTUMN

I only recognize jokes when they're funny.

DAVID

(Looks at Maddie and Autumn)

Are you sure you two are not long lost cousins.

It’s Maddie’s turn to look upset.

AUTUMN

(To O’Neil and Simmons)

Let’s get out of here.

O’Neil walks in front of Autumn and Simmons walks behind her. The assistants walk behind all of them. O’Neil reaches to open the door.

DAVID

Hey, be careful boys. Don’t let her wear you out.

O’Neil and Simmons have smiles on their faces. Autumn gets angry and slams the door. When David looks over to Maddie, she’s already at her office door and she slams it just as hard as Autunm did. David looks around to everyone who is watching him.

DAVID

Is it something I said?

CUT TO:
INT. - INSIDE MERCEDES - LATE MORNING

Maddie is driving. She hasn't spoken to David since they got into the car.

DAVID

Would you mind telling me what's on your mind...?

(Maddie doesn't answer)

Tell you what... I'll make it easy for you. Tell me why you're so upset and I'll tell you why you shouldn't be...

(She still doesn't answer him)

All right, if you don't wanna talk, fine. That's just fine... you can just nod your head when the feeling grabs you, if I don't grab you first...

(Maddie slowly turns to David and glares. She then turns back straight away)

Okay, fine. If you didn't wanna talk, all you had to do was say so.

CUT TO:
INT. - HALLWAY/ STOCKBROKER’S OFFICE - MINUTES LATER

Maddie walks ahead of David to find the room number of the office. She is also trying to get away from David.

DAVID

Can you at least give me a clue? It doesn't have to be a big one. It only has to tell me why you feel this need to give me the cold shoulder.

(She still ignores him)

Will you say something!?

They stand in front of the stockbroker’s office.

MADDIE

We're here.

DAVID

That's the sound I like to hear.

MADDIE

Just open the door.

DAVID

There it is again!

David opens the door. It takes the stockbroker by surprise.

STOCKBROKER

(Looks confused)

Can I... help you?

DAVID

Hi. We wanna know if you can help us find a Scott Edwards.

The stockbroker instinctively runs to his open window then jumps. Maddie and David run after him.

MADDIE

What is wrong with him!? Doesn’t he know we’re on the 10th Floor?

DAVID

I don’t know. Maybe it’s the simple fact that he’s crazy? Off his rocker?

MADDIE

Crazy like a fox.

David looks out of the window to see what Maddie is talking about. There is a lot of love seats and sofas laying out on the balcony below them. The stockbroker is trying to scurry off of the sofas to the fire escape. David prepares to jump, but Maddie grabs him.

MADDIE

What are you doing?

DAVID

Getting some fresh air. What does it look like I’m doing?

MADDIE

David I forbid you to jump out of this window.

DAVID

Oh, you forbid me now. What if I don’t obey, Mom? Are you gonna take away my phone privileges? Cut off my allowance? Make me eat broccoli?

Maddie holds him around his waist to prevent him from jumping.

MADDIE

You are not jumping!

DAVID

You’re right I'm not jumping... but we are!

David takes her with him as they tumble out of the window. Maddie screams until they land safely. They are very wet when they get up from the soft furniture. David looks into the office, which the furniture came from, to see the remnants of a recent flood.

DAVID

You vowed better or worse. What could be worse than taking a bath with our clothes on?

Maddie looks down and sees the stockbroker climbing down the fire escape.

MADDIE

Letting him get away while we waste time?

David leads the way as he runs over and starts climbing down the fire escape. Maddie follows.

CUT TO:
EXT. - BACK ALLEY OF BUILDING - MINUTES LATER

The stockbroker jumps down the fire escape, stumbles, looks up and sees David and Maddie still in pursuit. He gets up and runs. He tries to climb up the concrete wall, but fails to do so. He instead finds a space for him to hide.

CUT TO:

David jumps off the fire escape and waits for Maddie. He holds her around her waist and eases her feet to the ground.

MADDIE

Where did he go?

DAVID

Wherever he went, he couldn’t have gone far.

CUT TO:

The stockbroker is getting scared when he hears footsteps getting closer. He’s feeling around to try and get something to protect himself, but doesn’t find anything.

CUT TO:

David and Maddie’s point-of-view is shown as they walk closer to the guy’s hiding place.

VOICE (O.S.)

Don’t move!

Maddie and David turns around to see a police officer with his gun drawn. They both slowly put their hands up.

OFFICER

Maam, it’s all right. You can put your hands down. We came just in time.

MADDIE

(Confused)

For what?

OFFICER

For what? For preventing this piece of trash from harming you. We heard the commotion.

The officer advances on David and takes out his handcuffs.

MADDIE

Wait a second. He’s not attacking me. He’s my husband.

OFFICER

Your husband?

DAVID

Yeah, her husband. You know, the guy who says “I do” to the virgin in white... however in my case –

MADDIE

(Stopping him)

David.

OFFICER

So, what are you doing here?

MADDIE

(Gets nervous)

Doing here?

OFFICER

Doing here.

DAVID

We’re here to try to find a man.

OFFICER

A man?

MADDIE

Yes, a man. He took something which belongs to us.

In a split second, Maddie sees the stockbroker trying to inch his way out of the alley.

MADDIE

There he is!

The guy pushes David out of the way. Without thinking, Maddie starts running after the guy and knocks David in the other direction. The way Maddie pushed him, David's momentum knocks his head into a brick wall. The force of the blow knocks him out immediately. The officer follows Maddie to help get the guy and didn’t notice David getting knocked out. The camera focuses on David’s unconscious face slumping to the ground. Seconds later, Maddie runs back in the alley.

MADDIE

David! We got him! The cop is putting handcuffs on him as we speak... David...? David, if I find you hiding somewhere I swear I’ll –

(She looks down to see her husband lying unconscious)

David...?

(Kneels to the ground and touches the side of his face)

David...

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - DAVID’S HOSPITAL ROOM - THE NEXT MORNING

MADDIE

(Carefully looks at him)

David... sweetie. Did you get some sleep?

DAVID

Yeah, but it wasn’t a lot of fun though.

MADDIE

How so?

DAVID

I didn’t get to warm your feet under the covers.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Getting them ice cold, you mean.

DAVID

They can’t be that cold.

MADDIE

What are you talking about?

(She’s feeling his head)

Are you sure you’re all right?

DAVID

(Takes Maddie’s hand off his forehead)

Maddie, I hate to break it to you, but there are a lot of women dressed in white who has beaten you to it.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Obviously not enough.

DAVID

What is your problem?

MADDIE

There’s something weird going on, but I can’t put my finger on it.

DAVID

Considering where we are, it kinda makes sense.

MADDIE

No, this doesn’t make sense. How can you respond to something I never said?

DAVID

Didn’t you say you can’t put your finger on something?

MADDIE

Never mind. It must be all in my head.

A nurse comes in with a wheelchair.

NURSE

Okay, Mr. Addison. Would you sit in the chair, please?

DAVID

I never can understand why this has to be standard procedure.

He gets in the chair.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I’m beginning not to understand a lot of things.

DAVID

Why don’t you sit in my lap and I’ll help you figure it out.

MADDIE

Figure what out? C’mon, let’s go.

DAVID

(Gets out of the wheelchair)

Oh wait. I forgot my bag. Thanks for coming back and bringing this for me last night, Maddie. It really kept me company.

He goes to the bed and he bends over to reach for it.

MADDIE (V.O.)

His butt always did look good in those pants.

DAVID

(Walks back and sits in the wheelchair)

I’ll try to remember to wear these more often.

MADDIE

(Looks baffled)

Huh?

DAVID

Maddie, baby, cheer up. I’ll be out of this chair fast enough for you not to miss the view. No ifs, and, or butts about it.

MADDIE

I need to freshen up.

She goes straight to the bathroom.

DAVID

What’s her problem?

(Leans his head closer to the nurse)

Between you and me, she's the one who needed the overnight visit with you guys.

He gets out of the wheelchair.

NURSE

If you say so, Mr. Addison.

DAVID

Listen, me and the missus will meet you in front of the check out line. Apparently, she’s missing a few groceries in her basket.

He points to his head.

NURSE

Now that you’ve mentioned it, she does seem kinda out of it.

(Laughs to herself)

She acts as if you knew exactly what she was thinking... I’ll be right back.

She continues chuckling as she leaves the room.

DAVID

What?

(Slowing realizes what the nurse said)

Then what she said... she didn’t... but I was still able to...

He touches the bandage on his head and winces a little from the pain. He then looks over to the bathroom, then looks at the camera.

DAVID

This is gonna be good.

He looks back towards the bathroom.

FADE OUT
END OF ACT ONE
- 4MIN. COMMERCIAL BREAK -
ACT TWO
FADE IN:
INT. - INSIDE MERCEDES - LATE MORNING
`

Maddie drives.

DAVID

So, where are we going?

MADDIE

To the Police Station.

DAVID

The police Station?

MADDIE

We're paying our little stockbroker friend a visit.

DAVID

Really? Did I know this before I sat in the car?

MADDIE

You did, but you were asleep at the time. It’s no big deal.

(V.O.)

He's acting weirder than he normally is today. I wonder if taking him along is a good idea.

DAVID

You think I’m out of my mind, don’t you?

MADDIE (V.O.)

When were you ever in it?

DAVID

Hey, I heard that.

MADDIE

Heard what?

DAVID

Heard that... if I don’t eat my most important meal pretty soon, I’m gonna be sluggish for the rest of the day.

MADDIE

The nurse didn’t give you your breakfast?

DAVID

Yeah, but it’s in a hospital. Taste buds are known to die an untimely death.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I wish this conversation could follow in its footsteps.

DAVID

Fine.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Fine.

DAVID

Good.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Good.

DAVID

Let’s not talk anymore.

MADDIE (V.O.)

My thought exactly.

CUT TO:
INT. - POLICE INTERROGATION ROOM - MINUTES LATER

DAVID

Would you mind telling us about it?

STOCKBROKER

It depends on what you wanna know.

MADDIE (V.O.)

For starters, what’s your name?

DAVID

For starters, what’s your name?

Maddie has a strange look on her face.

STOCKBROKER

You don’t know my name?

MADDIE

Were we supposed to?

STOCKBROKER

Are you who I think you are?

DAVID

It depends on who I think you think we are.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Not this again.

DAVID

(To Maddie)

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

MADDIE

Sorry about what?

The stockbroker looks at them like they are crazy.

STOCKBROKER

You two are not from Haskell and Thorton Limited?

MADDIE

No. We’re private detectives.

STOCKBROKER

(Breathes a huge sigh of relief)

Then why were you asking for Scott Edwards?

DAVID

He’s been stalking our client. You know the one I’m talking about. She has an album and a single shooting up the top of the charts without a padded bra.

MADDIE

Without a what?

DAVID

(To Maddie)

You didn’t hear that.

STOCKBROKER

I thought it was a sure thing. I investigated the company myself. How did I know it was gonna go down the toilet?

MADDIE

Can you tell us where we can locate Scott?

DAVID

What a minute? He didn’t tell us his name yet, Maddie. First things first.

STOCKBROKER

My name is George Milner.

DAVID

Hey George, I’m David Addison.

MADDIE

I’m Maddie Hayes.

GEORGE

Nice to meet you.

Maddie shakes George’s hand David follows. David then turns to Maddie and shakes her hand. She yanks it when she realizes what she is doing.

DAVID

(To George)

Some people are too hard to satisfy.

MADDIE

Can we get back to where we can locate Scott Edwards?

GEORGE

Oh, yeah. He’s owns a local coffee house a few blocks from my office. It’s only thing keeping him out of the poor house... well, when he finishes paying his debts, then he’ll be in the poor house.

DAVID

(To Maddie)

Sound familiar?

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - AFTERNOON

DAVID

So, when is Duncan coming? If I knew we had to wait this long, I would have brought my pajamas.

They hear a knock on the door. David walks over, opens it and sees a good looking 20 something year old man walk in the room.

DAVID

Hey, Maddie...

(looks around and outside the door)

Where’s Duncan?

RYAN

He had an emergency case. It couldn’t wait.

DAVID

At least he has a good excuse. Hey, Ryan.

RYAN

Hey, Mr. Addison.

DAVID

It’s nice of you to come out of the bullpin. Believe me, this is more of a relief for us than it is for you. Where do I sign?

MADDIE

What’s the rush, David? Why don’t you take a look at the documents?

DAVID

Isn’t it why we hired a lawyer in the first place?

RYAN

Well, you should take a look just to make sure there isn’t any mistakes.

David grabs the multi-paged document off Maddie’s desk. He flips through some pages and throws the contract back on the desk.

DAVID

Time’s up. Where’s the pen?

MADDIE

Will be serious for a moment?

DAVID

All right. Let me see this.

He picks up the contract and sits in the chair opposite Maddie. He’s holding up the contract at eye level. As he checks the papers, Maddie and Ryan are waiting patiently.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I hope this doesn’t take long. There’s a movie I want to see in six hours.

DAVID

Okay, I’m ready to sign...

(Gets a little annoyed with Maddie's impatience. He mutters to himself)

First you want me to read the thing, then...

MADDIE

What was that, David?

DAVID

Nothin'... it was nothin'.

He grabs a pen, waves it around in a fancy motion, then lets his left hand scribble his name in four different pages.

DAVID

(To Maddie)

Did it feel good to you as it did for me?

(To Ryan)

You can check my x’s and o’s if you wanna.

(He gives the contract to Ryan)

Now if you two will excuse me, I have to go to the john.

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S BATHROOM - MINUTES LATER

David is washing his hands in the sink. He shuts the water off and reaches for a washcloth.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I wonder what type of underwear he prefers? Boxers...? briefs...? or thongs?

This stops David in his tracks.

MADDIE (V.O.)

If I was twenty... hell, if I was ten years younger, I would be asking him for his phone number.

He clearly senses Maddie isn’t directing her private thoughts to him. He walks out of the bathroom and sees Maddie and Ryan share a laugh. They are very friendly with each other. David has seen this display many times during the past year, but now he’s beginning to look at it in a different way. Despite his urge to confront Maddie on what he heard, he decides to keep it to himself.

DAVID

So, what joke did I miss?

MADDIE

David, I didn’t know you were still here.

DAVID

Disappointed?

MADDIE

Huh? Why would I be?

(V.O.)

I wonder what Ryan looks like with his shirt off?

DAVID

(Goes to the door)

Don’t let me spoil your fun.

MADDIE

David, what’s going on with you?

DAVID

Funny, I was thinking the same about you.

David storms out of the door while Maddie is left looking dumfounded. He continues to go to his office, until he sees O’Neil come in through the front door.

DAVID

O’Neil, what the hell are you doing here? When I said twenty four hours I wasn’t referring to the length of the assignment.

O’NEIL

I’m sorry, Mr. Addison, but I had to leave.

DAVID

Autumn’s that unbearable, huh?

O’NEIL

No, that’s not it. I couldn’t reschedule my doctor’s appointment.

DAVID

Then what are you doing here?.

O’NEIL

I have to get some stuff out of my office first before I go to my appointment. But don’t worry, sir. Simmons is still there.

DAVID

She specifically wanted more than one flatfoot.

(Cups his hands)

Yo, Bert...! Bert...!

(To Agnes)

Where’s your shorter half?

AGNES

He went to take his physical about an hour ago.

DAVID

What is this? National “check in to see my doctor” Day?

AGNES

I believe that’s next week.

David gives her a strange look. He turns to O’Neil and pats him on the shoulder.

DAVID

Go on. Get lost.

(O’Neil goes into his office)

Guess it’s my turn to get on the pitcher's mound.

He proceeds to leave.

AGNES

Want me to tell Miss Hayes?

David looks over to her office.

DAVID

I doubt she'll notice I’m gone.

He walks out.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S FOYER/ LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

Autumn is at her piano practicing the scales to warm up her vocal chords. She’s disrupted by the doorbell. She gets upset and storms to the door. She then swings it open.

AUTUMN

(Snaps)

What?

DAVID

Hi. I’m from the Boy Scouts. I was wondering if you want to buy our cookies.

AUTUMN

Isn’t the Girl Scouts the ones who sell cookies?

DAVID

If I’d had said that, you wouldn’t have believed me.

AUTUMN

I thought you said you'd provide me with protection. I have one bodyguard wondering upstairs. Do you call that protection?

DAVID

I’m not here to ask for your autograph.

She motions her hand around impatiently to let him in.

DAVID

Your cordial invitation underwhelms me...

(Looks around)

Where’s Simmons?

AUTUMN

Like I said, he’s patrolling the grounds upstairs. He’s keeping my girls company

She and David sit on the sofa.

DAVID

Your girls, huh? I’m surprised you remember they are human.

AUTUMN

Look, I may demand more of them than most people, but if I hadn’t demanded more of myself, I wouldn’t be at the position I am at today.

DAVID

You don’t have to beat them down to the ground to do it. I mean, Maddie and I are now responsible for feeding a few hundred families every two weeks. We also have an eight and a ten year old we devote our lives to. If we treat ‘em like you treat your girls, they’d be out the front door and never look back.

AUTUMN

What’s wrong with a little discipline?

DAVID

Discipline? I have nothing wrong with a little discipline... at least in this part of my life. Now slavery, that’s something I’m not too happy with.

AUTUMN

Slavery?

DAVID

You know, people who are forced to carry out orders against their will.

AUTUMN

They’re also people who are not paid. Those girls are paid handsomely.

DAVID

So why do they sport ugly looks on their faces?

AUTUMN

I need to listen to some music.

She gets up from the sofa, walks over and turns on the stereo. William Devon's "Be Thankful for What You've Got," plays in the background.

DAVID

(Singing)

... Against the white walls

TV antenna in the back

You may not have... a car at all

But remember brothers and sisters

You can still stand tall

Just be thankful... for what you’ve got

Diamond in the back

Sunroof top

Diggin’ the scene

With a gangsta lean

Oooo - oooooooo...

DAVID

(Singing)

Diamond in the back

Sunroof top

Diggin’ the scene

With a gangsta lean

Oooo - oooooooo

AUTUMN

(Singing)

Diamond in the back

Sunroof top

Diggin’ the scene

With a gangsta lean

Oooo - oooooooo

David turns to see Autumn sit back on the sofa.

DAVID

What do you know about this stuff?

AUTUMN

I love old school R&B. You know, Percy Sledge, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes...

DAVID

“The Sounds of Philadelphia.

AUTUMN

The Sounds of Philadelphia.”

AUTUMN

I grew up listening to it back in Philly.

DAVID

You’re from Philly...? Really?

AUTUMN

Yeah, originally. My parents divorced when I was fourteen. My mother decided she needed to drench her sorrows in the Southern California sun. Which part are you from?

DAVID

Fourth and Bainbridge.

AUTUMN

South Philly? I used to have a boyfriend who lived around there.

(Sighs)

I don’t know why I do this. Believe me, I’m not a bitch on purpose.

DAVID

Believe me, I’m an expert. So, I can tell the difference.

AUTUMN

I’m so used to people giving me what I want, when I want it. I just got a little irritated when you didn’t follow suit.

DAVID

I usually don’t follow suits. I either wear or defend against them.

AUTUMN

I do apologize.

DAVID

And I do accept. As for your music... Dentists must love you.

AUTUMN

What for?

DAVID

Three out of four of your chartbusters are causing major cavities.

AUTUMN

Unfortunately, that’s what is selling right now. But I was thinking of changing my tune to a more soulful sound. What do you think?

DAVID

I think you should follow your heart. Be thankful you’re in a position to do just that.

AUTUMN

I don’t want to alienate my fans.

DAVID

Who said you had to do a 180? You can do a 90... maybe even an acute angle will suffice.

AUTUMN

Speaking of acute angles, turn this way.

(David turns to face Autumn)

Now that’s a cute angle.

DAVID

Ummm... What just happened here?

AUTUMN

Nothing. You haven't kissed me yet.

DAVID

(Looks very uneasy)

Let’s not go there, okay?

AUTUMN

I don’t know. It’s just... you’re not like any guy I’ve ever met.

DAVID

Maybe it’s because I’m twice your age.

AUTUMN

Age ain’t nothing but a number.

DAVID

Well, this is a number you should stay away from.

AUTUMN

What is the big deal? So, you’re middle aged.

DAVID

And married.

AUTUMN

Do you see a ring on my finger?

DAVID

No, but I see one on mine.

AUTUMN

Really? Let me see.

She advances on David’s left hand, but a loud scream made David jump into action. He heads for the stairs.

CUT TO:

David runs through the upstairs hallway and sees Gabrielle.

DAVID

Did you see anything?

GABRIELLE

No, but I heard some noises coming from Autumn’s bedroom.

She points to the third door on the left. David runs over to his destination. He rushes in to see a pant leg going out of the window. He pushes the door open wider to see Simmons.

DAVID

Simmons, did you see him?

SIMMONS

The only thing I saw was a man running to the window.

DAVID

Did you see his face?

SIMMONS

Yeah, but I’d have to take off his mask to tell you what he looked like.

DAVID

(Frustrated)

This is great!

AUTUMN

(Gets excited)

You caught him!?

DAVID

Going outside the window. Yeah.

(To Gabrielle)

It’s okay, you can go back to whatever you were doing.

AUTUMN

Yeah, Gabrielle. It’s okay. Where’s Elena?

GABRIELLE

She went to get your dry cleaning, remember?

AUTUMN

Oh, yeah. I must have something on my mind.

She looks at David.

DAVID

Excuse me, ladies. I need to use my cell for a moment.

He walks to a quiet part of the hallway then dials the phone number.

DAVID

Hey, O’Neil. I need you to get back here pronto... next time you need a check up, get an M.D. who makes house calls.

He hangs up the phone.

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - DAVID AND MADDIE’S FOYER - LATE NIGHT

A dark and empty foyer. Sounds of a key wrestling through the lock. David quietly walks through the door. He’s trying not to wake up anybody in the house, especially Maddie. He carefully walks toward the stairs. He takes two steps.

MADDIE (O.S.)

(Seething under her breath)

Where the hell have you been?

DAVID

O’Neil had to go to a doctor’s appointment. I was filling in on bodyguard duty.

MADDIE

All night?

DAVID

This ain’t the usual nine to five gig, you know that. This is 24-hour duty meaning all hours of the day.

MADDIE (V.O.)

And night.

DAVID

If you’re trying to say there's something is going on with Autumn and I, it’s not. Nothing’s happening. Just like nothing’s happening with you and Ryan.

MADDIE

Me and Ryan? Please tell me where and how you were able to piece that together? Using your usual brand of logic no doubt.

DAVID

I didn’t have to come up with anything. You provided all the information I needed to know.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I was wondering when his drunkness would come back and pay me a visit.

DAVID

I saw you in there. In your office with wonderboy.

MADDIE

I was being friendly.

DAVID

That’s what you’re calling it, now? I call it flirting.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Unlike what you did with Autumn, of course.

DAVID

Of course, Autumn means nothing to me. I was out on business, Maddie. Business. My bright eyed and sober explanation consists of protecting the life of our client. It fills the definition quietly nicely, don’t you think?

MADDIE

So, you're telling me you didn't find Autumn attractive whatsoever?

DAVID

Well, it’s hard not to notice, Maddie. But I found something more important to obsess about. My wedding ring. The same ring you put on my finger when we swapped vows at the alter. If you haven’t noticed, I never took it off. Not even when I washed my hands, taken a dip in the pool. In fact, it’s the only thing I wear when we make love and when we take a shower. And you know why? Because it reminds me of how much I love you, how much I cherish you. I’d walk through fire if you wanted me to. That’s why you will never see me without this ring

(Points to the ring)

Comprendé?

MADDIE

(softening)

You could have called.

DAVID

Yes, I know, but there were a lot of things going on.

MADDIE

For instance?

DAVID

For instance, someone broke into Autumn’s bedroom.

MADDIE

Were you able catch the person?

DAVID

I only saw someone climbing out of the window. Simmons was chasing after whoever it was.

MADDIE

Will he be able to identify him?

DAVID

No but, whoever this person is gave us a souvenir.

(He takes out a plastic bag with a small flashlight in it and gives it to Maddie)

I’m gonna take this to the lab first thing.

MADDIE

Well, on my side of things, Jamie and I visited Scott Edwards in his coffee shop.

DAVID

Yeah? What happened?

MADDIE

He claimed he wasn’t in the auditorium and he would never do anything to hurt Autumn. Just to be sure, Jamie’s gonna follow him tomorrow.

ASHLEY (O.S.)

Do you guys mind keeping it down?

David and Maddie look up their spiral staircase to see their daughter rubbing her eyes with both hands.

ASHLEY

Some of us have to get up early in the morning.

DAVID

Oh yeah?

He starts running up the stairs and Ashley starts running back to her room. Maddie gets up and laughs to herself as she slowly walks up the stairs.

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - CONFERENCE ROOM - NEXT MORNING

Many of the employees of Blue Moon are either standing or sitting in anticipation of a meeting Maddie emailed an hour earlier. The room is full of chatter. A few seconds pass then the buzz subsides as Maddie and David enter the room.

DAVID

Is everyone here...? Bert?

BERT

Yes, sir?

DAVID

I wanted to see if I can still see you. Agnes...? Where’s Agnes?

AGNES

I’m here, Mr. Addison.

(Walks into the room)

I was on the phone with one of Autumn’s assistants. She wanted to know how the investigation is going.

DAVID

(Turns to Maddie)

Wanna break it to ‘em?

MADDIE

Sure. There’s nothing more I like to do than to break pressing news, especially this kind of news –

DAVID

The cat didn’t come out of your bag, did it Agnes?

AGNES

Uh-uh, Mr. Addison. It’s hard for a cat to come out of anything since I don’t own one.

MADDIE

Are we finished

Agnes and David nods. He adds a strange look to Agnes as he nods.

MADDIE

(Looking around the room)

Wait, we’re missing somebody

(Looks to the door)

Oh, there you are.

RYAN

I’m sorry, Maddie. I was caught on the freeway.

DAVID

You two are on a first name basis, I see.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Stuff it, Addison!

DAVID

Well, I am a bit famished.

He leans over to get some danish off the coffee table.

MADDIE

As I was saying, Mr. Addison and I... with the help of Mr. Duncan and Ryan of course...

DAVID

(To himself)

Of course.

MADDIE

Lou LaSalle Investigations, Security and Armored Cars are no more. As of nine o’clock on this very day, they are all part of Blue Moon.

The shock and surprise turns into cheers of excitement and triumph. A few seconds later, the employees start to murmur and have worried looks on their faces.

DAVID

Whoa, whoa, whoa, what’s the matter, kids? This is supposed to be good news.

KRISTINE

Good for who?

INEZ

Yeah.

All the other employees mutter the same sentiments.

DAVID

Wait a second. What’s up with the bad vibes?

JAMIE

Mr. Addison, mergers usually mean we're getting downsized.

DAVID

Downsized? Did you hear Miss Hayes say anything about anyone getting downsized? I didn’t hear anything about that at all. The subject never entered our minds, and it never will.

He looks over to Maddie.

KRISTINE

Are you sure, Mr. Addison?

DAVID

Do pinkies swear...?

(Looks over to Maddie and Ryan)

Do cradles get robbed?

The employees are cheering again as they all hug each other.

DAVID

(Looks at employees)

Now, that’s what I wanna see.

(Looks at Ryan and Maddie leave the room; To himself)

Now, that’s what I don’t wanna see.

He moves over to the door to follow them, but he meets up with happy employees hugging him along the way. He manages to reach the door.

JAMIE

Mr. Addison.

(He looks distracted as he turns around)

I hate to cut this celebration short, but I have to go and see what I can dig up on Scott Edwards.

DAVID

Oh, yeah, no problem. I’ll save you the last piece of cake in the fridge.

Jamie smiles at her boss then leaves the room. He gets ready to leave until –

BERT

Boss.

DAVID

(Breathes a heavy sigh)

Is there a silent alarm keeping me in this room?

BERT

I don’t believe so. I can install such a system for you if you like.

DAVID

(Puts his hand to his forehead in frustration)

What do you want?

BERT

How come I’m not on this case?

DAVID

What case?

BERT

This case. The Autumn Summers case. I’m well equipped to follow whoever Jamie is following. In fact, I’m better equipped to handle such an operation. You taught me everything I know. You made me who I am today –

DAVID

I asked for you.

BERT

You asked for me?

DAVID

I asked for you, but you weren’t here. You were at your doctor’s office.

BERT

Damn!

DAVID

Bert, bert don’t worry. I got something else for you to do.

BERT

(Gets excited)

Just name it, sir.

DAVID

I took the flashlight into the lab this morning. The set of prints that were discovered were very interesting... not as interesting than the last Tom Cruise movie, but we’ll have to deal with what we have.

BERT

(Trying to follow David’s comment)

Okay.

DAVID

Go to this address.

(Hands Bert a piece of paper)

and to this room number. Ask for a George Milner. Make believe you want him to be your new stockbroker. Find a way to get him out of the office so you can case the joint. You got it?

BERT

Roger!

DAVID

No, his name is George.

BERT

No I mean... never mind. I’m on my way.

Bert leaves the room.

DAVID

Now, back to my covert operation.

He passes a few euphoric employees who are still celebrating. He gives them a smile and a thumbs up then continues to go toward Maddie’s office. He gets a few feet from her door.

MADDIE (Voice Over, Off Screen)

What am I doing in here? I should be celebrating with David.

DAVID

It’s the first sensible thing I heard you say.

(To Camera)

This sure beats putting my ear to her door.

MADDIE (Voice Over, Off Screen)

He’s so cute... And the way he bends over –

DAVID

Okay, I’ve heard enough.

(Barges through the door)

So there you are. I was worried you two were stampeded by a horde of people having a good time.

MADDIE

Ryan was pointing out some of the finer details of the merger.

RYAN

Yeah, we’re just double, triple checking to see if all the information is correct.

DAVID

So am I.

MADDIE

Is the party over?

DAVID

Are you kidding? They’ll last all night if we let them.

RYAN

Does anyone have the time?

DAVID

It’s...

He checks his Rolex on his left wrist and notices that something is missing.

MADDIE

It’s what, David?

DAVID

(Heads for the door)

It’s a quarter passed ten.

MADDIE

Where are you going?

DAVID

There’s something I have to do.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Running off to save your diva in distress?

DAVID

This doesn’t have anything to do with...

(Stops himself)

I’ll be back as soon as I can.

He closes the door behind him.

CUT TO:
INT. - DAVID AND MADDIE’S HOUSE - MINUTES LATER

The Delfonics song, “Ready or Not,” creeps up as he hurries himself through the front door and starts his search for the missing item. He goes straight to the living room. He checks all of the coffee tables, tosses the pillows off the sofas, then checks under the sofas.

CUT TO:
INT. - DAVID AND MADDIE’S WALK-IN CLOSET/ BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS

David looks through all the drawers in Maddie’s make-up counter. He then goes into the bathroom and looks in there.

CUT TO:
INT. - BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

He emerges out from under the bed and goes over to the drawers. He looks in every single drawer.

CUT TO:
INT. - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

David looks in the refrigerator, then looks all around the kitchen counters, the island. He then checks the sink He searches every place he can think of. He stops, looks up at the ceiling in frustration and takes a deep sigh.

CUT TO:
EXT. - FRONT DOOR OF HOUSE - MINUTES LATER

David rings the bell and waits. The door opens from David's point-of-view. Autumn appears.

DAVID

I may have left my wedding ring.

FADE OUT.
END OF ACT TWO.
- 2 MIN. COMMERCIAL BREAK -
FADE IN:
HALFWAY BUMPER (1):

A still image of the title is shown. An abbreviated version of the theme is used. Maddie and David’s voices are in voice over.

MADDIE

Moonlighting in the 21st Century will be back in a moment.

DAVID

I’m surprised you had time to say the title.

FADE OUT
- 2 MIN COMMERICAL BREAK -
FADE IN:
HALFWAY BUMPER (2):

A still image of the title is shown. An abbreviated version of the theme is used. Maddie and David’s voices are in voice over.

MADDIE

(Clears her throat)

David, were back.

DAVID

Already? But I wasn’t finished.

MADDIE

You’ll have to start earlier next time.

FADE OUT
ACT THREE
FADE IN:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Agnes walks into the office.

AGNES

Here’s the file you asked for, Miss Hayes.

MADDIE

Thank you, Agnes.

AGNES

Oh, and Ryan said he'll be here in a few minutes.

MADDIE

Thanks.

(Agnes turns to leave)

Agnes?

(She turns back around; faces Maddie)

Should I be thinking like this? I mean, should I cloud my thoughts about another man? This is the “this” we always complain to men when they do this.

AGNES

The "this" you're referring to is Ryan, right?

MADDIE

How did you –

AGNES

I've been having similar thoughts myself. I bet Mr. Addison doesn’t worry about doing "this." I bet he has already done “this” to Autumn.

MADDIE

That’s the "this" I’m worried about.

(Agnes looks at her)

Okay, it may sound hypocritical and you know what? I don’t care if it is. What we’re doing is fantasy, it’s harmless.

AGNES

And Mr. Addison?

MADDIE

Nothing is harmless with Mr. Addison.

AGNES

What would he say if he knew?

MADDIE

About this? About me lusting after another man? A young man...? Even if my thoughts are just thoughts and will never be something I want or care to pursue...? I don’t know. But I do know he's not going to dance and sing about it. Why is it when men do it they’re supposed to, but when we do it it’s like we’ve commented adultery? We should be allowed to have our minds wander if we want to.

AGNES

You know what sounds crazy?

MADDIE

I have I feeling I know what you’re gonna say.

AGNES

You think Mr. Addison is going after Autumn, don't you?

(Maddie nods)

Miss Hayes, I thought you knew.

MADDIE

What was I supposed to know?

AGNES

It’s not what Mr. Addison sees or even what he says, it’s almost always what he does that counts the most.

MADDIE

How are you able to be so observant, Agnes?

AGNES

There’s not a lot of work for me to think about anything else... other than figuring out what rhymes with abbreviation.

MADDIE

Appreciation.

AGNES

It’s an interesting combination.

MADDIE

I think I need some isolation.

AGNES

I’m also observant enough to know one more thing...

(Walks over to the door)

Be happy Mr. Addison doesn’t read minds.

Agnes leaves.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - A FEW HOURS LATER

Autumn and David continue to search all around the living room.

DAVID

You see it?

AUTUMN

No, not yet.

DAVID

What about you, O'Neil!?

O'Neil emerges from the closet.

O'NEIL

Not yet, sir.

DAVID

Check the kitchen. I think I made myself a ham and cheese sandwich in there.

O'Neil leaves. David moves over to the mantle over the fireplace. Autumn moves over to one of the sofas.

DAVID

I don’t know how it could have slipped off. I never let 14 carats of anything out of my sight. Especially those carats. Where the hell could it be?

He checks a small vase and turns it upside down.

AUTUMN

(Her arm is under the sofa)

Maybe it’ll turn up when you least...

(She feels something then pulls it out. It’s a gold ring; Mumbles to herself)

expect it.

DAVID

When you’re married to someone like Maddie Hayes, you always have to be on your toes. Sniffing out trouble is part of her pedigree.

AUTUMN

C’mon she can’t be that bad.

She looks to see if he’s looking, then hides the ring in her pants pocket.

DAVID

I’m not saying she is. She just makes things a little hard to explain, and this certainly will be hard to explain. For my sake, I hope I never have to.

AUTUMN

David, I didn’t mean to –

DAVID

I know you didn’t.

He walks over to the sofa.

AUTUMN

Listen, we’re gonna find the ring, even if it takes all night.

DAVID

I hope it doesn’t. I have to pick up my kids from school.

AUTUMN

You should know by now, I wouldn’t let anything bad happen to you.

She places her hand on David’s cheek and turns his head toward hers. Before he knew what hit him, she kisses him. It was longer than a peck, but it was still a short kiss. For David, it wasn’t short enough. One of the paparazzi, who is hiding in the bushes takes pictures outside one of the living room windows.

AUTUMN

I know I had no right to do what I did. I just couldn’t resist.

DAVID

Okay, if you didn’t hear me before, take the wax out of your ears so you can hear me now. I don’t want to, need to, or intend to do anything I’m supposed to do with my wife.

Autumn nods her head and she looks around the room to desperately find something else to talk about. She sees Gabrielle come into the room from the kitchen. Autumn motions her hand to tell Gabrielle to come over to where Autumn is standing. She looks to see if David is looking and slips Gabrielle the ring.

AUTUMN

(In Gabrielle's ear)

Gabby, make sure Miss Hayes gets this. Tell her where it came from, okay?

Gabrielle nods then leaves the room. Autumn turns around and looks over at the clock on the opposite wall. She looks confused until she checks her watch on her wrist.

AUTUMN

Your ring isn’t the only thing lost around here. I lost track of time. My clock decided to go on strike.

DAVID

Let's hope, for your sake, it doesn't become contagious.

David looks at his watch. A close-up shows the minute and hour hands of the watch.

DAVID

It’s...

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - A FEW HOURS LATER

A close-up of the same kind of watch, but the hands of the watch have changed. A wider shot reveals Burt lowering his arm.

BERT

... Twenty minutes to three.

RYAN

Like I said Maddie, I think I should step aside.

MADDIE

Ryan, don’t be ridiculous. Does this have anything to do with David?

RYAN

Now that you’ve mentioned it...

(He takes a sip of his juice)

you’re husband has been acting a bit strange.

MADDIE

That's a bit of an understatement.

RYAN

I think it's wise if I help Mr. Duncan on another case.

MADDIE

But –

RYAN

The case is about to wrap itself up anyway.

MADDIE

It doesn’t matter how long this case is, what matters is you finishing the work you were assigned. No one for any reason should be able to force you off a case because of imaginary sense of jealously.

BERT

Miss Hayes.

MADDIE

Oh, Bert. Sorry to keep you waiting. What did you come in to talk about?

BERT

I’m reporting about my assignment.

MADDIE

What assignment, Mr. Viola?

BERT

Mr. Addison didn’t tell you?

MADDIE

He’s not around much to tell me anything these days.

BERT

Um, well, Mr. Addison wanted me to go undercover as George Milner’s new client.

MADDIE

And?

BERT

He’s not there.

MADDIE

He’s not there? David didn't get a bandage on his head, coupled with a hefty hospital bill for chasing someone who isn't there.

BERT

Well, he is there, but not as George Milner.

(He hands Maddie a folder)

He’s –

MADDIE

Jerry Pearson.

(Leafing through the folder)

He’s not a stockbroker he’s –

BERT

A bookkeeper of Haskell and Thorton Limited.

MADDIE

(To herself)

So, that’s why.

BERT

Why what, Miss Hayes?

MADDIE

The reason he jumped out the window. When David and I spoke to... What’s his name?

BERT

Jerry –

MADDIE

He thought we were after him. He must have screwed up with the higher ups. You usually don’t jump out of a window when someone says they’re looking for someone. Next thing to do is find out who this Jerry is and the background of this company.

BERT

I’m already on it. Agnes is checking into it as we speak... well, just as soon as she gets off the phone with one of Autumn’s assistants.

MADDIE

Getting chummy with them I see.

BERT

Not really. One of them keeps calling her to keep tabs on the investigation.

The buzz from Maddie’s phone interrupts the conversation. She presses a button on her phone.

MADDIE

What is it Agnes?

AGNES

David’s on the phone.

MADDIE

It’s about time. The party’s been over two hours ago.

AGNES

Not that David. It’s the David you created with the other David.

MADDIE

That David?

AGNES

Uh-huh, that David.

MADDIE

So, where’s the other David?

AGNES

That’s what this David is calling to find out.

MADDIE

Put David on... Hi sweetie did Dad start his concoction of what he thinks is dinner?

LITTLE DAVID (O.S.)

I’m still here.

MADDIE

Here meaning?

LITTLE DAVID (O.S.)

School.

MADDIE

Your father didn’t pick you two up, yet?

LITTLE DAVID (O.S.)

Nope.

MADDIE

And where’s Ashley?

LITTLE DAVID (O.S.)

She’s playing with her friends over on the other side of the room.

MADDIE

I’ll be right there in a few. Bye, bye.

(Hangs up the phone; To Bert and Ryan)

I’m sorry but I have to go.

RYAN

Which brings me back to why I needed to talk to you.

MADDIE

Ryan, if you want to leave, leave. But don’t leave because someone else wants you to leave. Leave because you want to leave.

BERT

I need to leave.

(Ryan and Maddie looks at him)

To... go to... the bathroom.

He exits, but stops when Gabrielle passes him to go into Maddie's office.

GABRIELLE

Hi, Miss Hayes.

MADDIE

Gabrielle... is everything all right?

GABRIELLE

Oh, there's nothing to worry about. Autumn wanted me to give you this.

She takes out David's ring from her pocket and hands it to Maddie. Maddie looks shocked as her eyes follows the ring going into her palm in disbelief. She lifts her eyes up to Gabrielle.

GABRIELLE

Is there something wrong?

MADDIE

Oh, no. No... nothing's wrong. Thank you.

GABRIELLE

(Looking awkward)

Well... goodbye, Miss Hayes.

She turns to walk out of the office. Bert turns to see her go, then turns his attention to his boss. He decides to give Maddie some privacy and leaves. Maddie regains her composer and turns to Ryan.

MADDIE

Well, if you will excuse me, I must be going. Ryan, think about what I said, okay?

RYAN

(Looks a little puzzled)

Okay.

MADDIE

Okay.

She prepares to leave her office. Ryan is a few strides ahead of her and is walking to the get to the front door.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Autumn enters the living room. She sees David sitting on the sofa with his head still in his hands. She sits next to him and puts her arm around his shoulders.

AUTUMN

I think I can find a way to make this situation better.

DAVID

If it ain't gold and can fit on my fourth finger, I seriously doubt it.

David’s cell phone rings and he takes it out of his pants pocket.

DAVID

(Sounds depressed)

Yo...?

(He sits up in his seat)

Jamie, what were you able to find...? You’re kiddin’... you’re not kiddin’... are you kiddin’? I’ll be there before you can say a mouthful. Speaking of which, did you happen to run into a piece of cake sitting in the fridge...? good, I asked Agnes to do it for me since I’m stuck doing... what I’m doing.... Yeah, I’m leavin’ right now, okay? Bye.

He hangs up the phone and get up from the sofa.

AUTUMN

You really have to?

DAVID

Yeah, I have to. Jamie has brought a major development to our office. It starts with Scott and ends with Edwards.

He starts to walk out the room.

CUT TO:
INT. - CONFERENCE ROOM - 30 MINUTES LATER

David walks in and Jamie sits in one of the leather chairs.

DAVID

So, where is he?

VOICE (O.S.)

Is this the room you said for us to meet?

JAMIE

Yes, Scott come in. Mr. Addison, this is Scott Edwards.

DAVID

Your reputation precedes you, Mr. Edwards.

He shakes Scott’s hand.

SCOTT

Good I hope.

DAVID

Depends on what you tell us.

JAMIE

Is Miss Hayes still in her office? I didn’t have time to go over and check.

DAVID

You’re in luck because I do. Be back in a sec... or two or ten...

SCOTT

I get the picture.

DAVID

Good. I didn’t know what I’d do if you didn’t.

He leaves the room.

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

David knocks on her door.

DAVID

Hey, Maddie. Our special guest star has dropped by for his special appearance.

(He hears nothing)

Hey Goldilocks, the coast is clear I saw those bears hibernating in the men’s room and by the smell of it, they’ll be alone in there for a long time...

(Still hears nothing)

Maddie...? C’mon we can’t keep Scott

(Opens the door to an empty room)

waiting.

He looks around the room to see if she left a note or a message on her voice mail, but doesn’t find anything. He looks under the desk almost as a joke. When he lifts his head from under the desk, he sees five words on Maddie’s email on her laptop that has got him concerned. “We need to talk – Ryan.” When he steps away from the desk, the door opens and David looks at Ashley and little David stand behind their mother. David’s eyes are set firmly on Maddie.

DAVID

We need to talk.

FADE OUT
END OF ACT THREE
- 4 MIN COMMERCIAL BREAK -
ACT FOUR
FADE IN:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

After a few seconds of tense silence, David points to Maddie’s laptop.

DAVID

What the hell is this?

ASHLEY

Uh-oh. I feel a major blow up coming from that volcano. Let’s go to the game room o’ brother of mine.

LITTLE DAVID

It’s not like we haven’t seen it before.

She pushes little David in the direction of the game room. When their children leave, Maddie calmly walks in her office and closes the door.

DAVID

Well...? I’m waiting.

MADDIE

Waiting for what?

DAVID

An explanation.

MADDIE

Not only do I not have an explanation, I don’t owe you one.

DAVID

Don’t owe me one?

MADDIE

Don’t owe you one! You disappear for hours at a time, forget to pick up the kids. And when I finally get a chance to look at your face, what do you greet me with!? “What the hell is this?” Damn it! That question should only be asked by me! Get it! Is it getting inside you what you think is a brain!?

DAVID

(Seething)

Flattery will get you nowhere.

MADDIE

I know what’ll get you nowhere. This flimsy excuse for being angry.

DAVID

Flimsy...!? Flimsy...!? The only thing flimsy is your denial in telling me there’s nothing going on between you two!

MADDIE

Two!?

DAVID

As in you one, and Ryan two. Do I have to write it on a blackboard or do you need to peek at somebody else’s notes to keep up?

MADDIE (V.O.)

Why you intolerable, cantankerous, repulsive excuse for a human being.

DAVID

So, you’re trying to tell me that checkin’ out your new hunk is a load of bunk, huh?

MADDIE

Checking out my new...

(She’s trying to hide her stunned reaction)

How could you have possibly known about –

DAVID

Don’t worry about how I know.

MADDIE

You were following me, were you?

DAVID

Didn’t have to.

MADDIE

Why is it when I do it, it’s considered the worst crime a woman can ever commit, but when you do it, it’s considered a harmless activity?

DAVID

But I didn’t –

MADDIE

Bull! You did, you know you did! You did it so much it took you five hours to get back here!

DAVID

I was working!

MADDIE

I guess you worked so hard you forgot to take this with you.

She pulls out the ring and shoves it in his face. David looks stunned.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Don't you even try to wiggle you way out of this one.

DAVID

You’re taking it wrong if you think there’s anything going on! Denying what? There’s nothing to deny!...Oh,we’re back to the “pal” thing again. When are you ever gonna get off that word? I bet it will live on long after the human race is extinct! Cockroaches will incorporate it in their vocabulary...! Truth!? If your right hand is supposed to be the truth, I’m in more trouble than I thought!

MADDIE

What I’m I saying? Of course, You’ll deny it! Well, I hate to break it to you pal, you’ve been busted! You've been reeled in by my fishing rod with a dose of truth attached as bait! Why am I wasting my breath? Why do I even bother? You wouldn’t know the truth even if it smacksyou in the face! I don’t know if I can believe what comes out of that big mouth anymore!

DAVID

What am I supposed to believe other than my wife having the hots for a younger guy.

MADDIE

Unlike my husband having the hots for a younger woman?

MADDIE (V.O.)

The hots for another guy? I’m not the one who’s hours are not accounted for! I’ve been here, in this office closing what is supposed to be one of the best, if not the best thing that ever happened to this agency, and what do you do? You’re running around with a Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore wanna be...Are you crazy!

DAVID

If my memory serves me correctly, being a bodyguard is one of the things you do as a detective. Remember that word, Maddie? detective? What do you think we’re in this business to do? Let our clients die ‘cuz you think I’m using this as a contact sport? What do you care...? I bet it was part of your plan to get rid me!

MADDIE

That has nothing to do with it!

DAVID

That has everything to do with it!

MADDIE

I already told you there’s nothing going on.

DAVID

Yeah, well my nothing is different from your nothing.

MADDIE

How so? I’d love to hear this.

DAVID

‘Cuz my nothing is really a nothing.

MADDIE

She certainly is.

Maddie feels a sudden pain as it tightens the right side of her neck. She grabs hold of it.

DAVID

(Looking concerned)

What? What’s the matter?

MADDIE

I just felt a little something in my neck.

DAVID

Let me help.

He stands behind her, puts his hands on shoulders (closer to her neck) and starts giving her a massage.

MADDIE

David –

DAVID

Maddie, shhh.

MADDIE (V.O.)

Look, I don’t need you to... oooh, this feels soo good...

(David smirks as he continues massaging her)

He always knows how to... What a minute. What am I...?

She jerks herself away from David’s grasp.

MADDIE

What are you doing? We're in the middle of an argument.

DAVID

You know what?

MADDIE

What?

DAVID

(Softly)

You always look so damn good when you’re angry.

MADDIE (V.O.)

David, don’t do this.

DAVID

Can’t help it.

MADDIE (V.O.)

You can try.

DAVID

But I won’t.

MADDIE

Excuse me?

DAVID

I’m not changing how I feel.

MADDIE (V.O.)

David.

DAVID

Maddie.

MADDIE

You’re not going to change the subject.

(V.O.)

Kiss me.

DAVID

What did you just say?

MADDIE

You’re not going to change the subject.

(V.O.)

Kiss me.

DAVID

What if I kiss you right now?

MADDIE

I’ll stop you before it happens.

DAVID

Are you sure?

MADDIE

What do you mean, “Are you sure?” Sure, I’m sure. Of course, I’m sure. Why wouldn’t I be sure?

(V.O.)

Because I’m not sure.

DAVID

Maybe this will help.

He walks in front of her and prepares to kiss her. Before they touch lips there's knocking on the door. He opens it to find Jamie on the other side. He immediately remembers why she is standing there.

DAVID

Jamie, I... I’m sorry. I totally forgot. Miss Hayes and I were in a middle of an important discussion. Is he still here?

JAMIE

Yes. I was able to stall him by turning on ESPN.

DAVID

Nothing like “Sportscenter” to put a guy in his place.

CUT TO:
INT. - CONFERENCE ROOM - MINUTES LATER

DAVID

How did you meet up with George?

SCOTT

It was the weirdest thing. It was like he knew when I needed help at the precise time I needed it, you know?

DAVID

I’m trying to.

SCOTT

You see, the business Autumn and I started wasn't doing so well and our venture capitalist were demanding their money back.

MADDIE

I don’t understand how Jerry contacted you?

SCOTT

Who?

DAVID

Who?

MADDIE

You didn’t know...?

(Realizing)

Oh, right, you don’t know.

DAVID

About?

MADDIE

Mr. Viola came back and found out your stockbroker is nothing more than a bookkeeper for Haskell and Thorton Limited.

BERT (O.S.)

The same company owned by the same venture capitalists who’s trying to blackmail you into making them Autumn’s managers.

(Bert walks in – to Maddie)

Sorry, Miss Hayes. I couldn’t resist.

SCOTT

Now it makes sense. I was in their waiting room.

MADDIE (V.O.)

I hope Ryan reconsiders.

DAVID

(Getting up)

Okay, That's it!

MADDIE

David?

DAVID

You're still thinking about him, aren't you?

MADDIE

Thinking about who?

DAVID

C'mon Maddie, don't play games with me.

MADDIE

If you need to know, which for the record is entirely none of your business, Ryan came to me to abandon our case. And now, I can understand why.

DAVID

You can, huh? I hope you can understand why I'm about to this.

He turns and walks out the office. Maddie looks at the rest of the people in the room who are now speechless.

MADDIE

Listen, let's forget about what just happened if you don't mind.

(Everyone nods)

We're here to figure out what is going on with Mr. Edwards, okay...?

(Everyone still stares at her)

Okay?

(They all nod again)

Okay... now where were we?

SCOTT

(Feels uncomfortable)

Umm... as I... was saying... I was waiting to meet the people at Haskell and Thorton so I can beg for more time and George... I mean, Jerry sat next to me. We got into some small talk. The next thing I know I was telling him my sob story.

JAMIE

Then he invited you into his office –

BERT

The office his bosses set up for him, and persuaded you to part company with your hard earned cash into a worthless investment.

JAMIE

(To Bert)

You mean, his backers owned the company Scott invested and deliberately made it go belly up?

BERT

Uh-huh.

SCOTT

So, you mean this was a set up right from the start?

BERT

Yup. It was done to put you in a no-win situation, sell Autumn out, and gain control of her finances.

SCOTT

>How can you be sure?

BERT

(Opens the folder of Jerry's file on Scott)

It's all in here.

He shows Scott the folder.

JAMIE

Not only are they after Autumn's finances, they want control over her future merchandising endeavors.

Scott shakes his head in disbelief while Maddie stares off to the other side of the room half listening to what is being said.

BERT

Agnes is still getting more info. on what other properties they have their filthy paws on.

SCOTT

But it doesn’t explain why Autumn thinks I’m the one who’s after her.

BERT

Someone close to her must be putting sweet nothings in her ear. Right Miss Hayes...

(She is still in her trance)

Miss Hayes?

MADDIE

Oh... I'm sorry, Bert. Why don’t we continue this tomorrow. I have two hungry children to feed.

Everyone gets up from their seats to leave the room. Bert spots David's cell phone on the table. He checks to see if there are any messages. There is one new message. When everyone else has left the room, Bert presses a button and retrieves the message.

VOICE (Digitally distorted – O.S.)

Some kiss you gave Autumn, Romeo. Give up the investigation our your wife will find something interesting to read in next morning's paper.

Bert nervously puts the phone into his pocket and quickly walks out of the room.

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - DAVID’S OFFICE - THE NEXT MORNING

David's theme plays as David stares aimlessly out of the window. He hears a knock on the door.

DAVID

Yo.

BERT

(Walking into the room)

Umm... Mr. Addison? I hate to tell you this...

DAVID

How could she do this?

BERT

Huh?

DAVID

(Swivels his chair around)

How can Maddie do this to me?

BERT

Mr. Addison –

DAVID

She basically has set her sights on a new guy.

BERT

Have you ever seen them kiss?

DAVID

Is Ryan still walking?

BERT

Yeah.

DAVID

Then I didn't see them kissing.

BERT

Speaking of which –

DAVID

I don't know what went wrong.

BERT

If this will ease your mind, sir, I was in Miss Hayes' office yesterday while Ryan was here, and I didn't see anything alarming... not as alarming as this...

Bert unfolds the paper and turns the page to the three-inch color photo of David and Autumn kissing. David can't believe what he sees before him.

BERT

You left your cell in the conference room last night.

(Puts the phone on David's desk)

It had a message threatening to put this in the morning paper if you continued with the investigation. I took the liberty to collaborate with a friend of mine in the intelligence community to see if we can trace the call. I wanted to tell you, but my friend felt it was best not to worry you if it turned out to be bogus. Unfortunately, it wasn't and we couldn't trace the call in time. However, he's in the middle of unscrambling the voice of whoever left that message. He should be calling me in a few hours.

David puts his head in his hands, then puts his head on his desk.

BERT

Umm... sir, while you were... you know, kissing Autumn... were you... thinking of...

DAVID

Trading Maddie in for a new model? Or in this case, a new ex-model? Bert, I'm not gonna lie, the thought crossed my mind for me to give Autumn a tune up. But me and Maddie... we've traveled too many miles, hugged too many curves, solved too many forks in too many roads for me to carry the thought of adultery seriously. How many times did I think we were headed for another dead end, only to find there was a new road being paved? True... a new model runs better, drives faster, and has better equipment, but breaking in a new Porshe to replace a vintage Mustang...? Never.

BERT

(Bert smiles)

But sir, isn't it what Miss Hayes was alluding to?

DAVID

How so?

BERT

Well, you just said the thought crossed your mind about Autumn, and you never intended on acting upon those impulses. Shouldn't Miss Hayes have the same luxury to think the way you think she was thinking?

DAVID

Yeah, but –

BERT

She wouldn't have looked so upset when Gabrielle gave her that ring if she didn't –

DAVID

Ring? What ring?

BERT

The ring Gabrielle said Autumn found.

David gets angry, gets out of his chair, sprints to the door, and out the office. He continues to race toward the front door.

DAVID

(To Agnes but doesn't look at her)

I'm going to Autumn's.

AGNES

Yes, Mr....

(David slams the door)

Addison.

CUT TO:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - MINUTES LATER

Maddie's theme plays as a close-up of Maddie's profile looking at her laptop. She stops, looks up, then decides to get up and walk out the door.

CUT TO:
INT. - DAVID’S OFFICE - MINUTES LATER

Maddie's theme continues playing when she opens the door and walks inside.

MADDIE

David, I'm...

She heads straight to the color photo of her husband kissing another woman in the paper.

MADDIE

... Sorry for feeling the need to apologize!

She tosses the paper on the desk and storms out of the office. She continues walking to the front door.

MADDIE

(To Agnes but doesn't look at her)

I'll be at Autumn's house.

AGNES

Yes, Miss...

(Maddie slams the door)

Hayes.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S FRONT DOOR - MINUTES LATER

Autumn opens the door and sees David.

AUTUMN

David! I'm so glad you're here!

She pulls him inside before he has the chance to say a word. She continues dragging him into the living room.

AUTUMN

I've been wondering if I should add this song in my next concert. It's so different than what I usually sing –

DAVID

Autumn –

AUTUMN

Just listen to it, please? I need to get your opinion.

David relents and sits on the sofa. Autumn eagerly takes out the tape she was practicing with and put in another one. She presses the play button and quickly sets her position a few feet away from David. She closes her eyes and anticipates the start of the music. A slow melodic ballad makes its way out of her stereo speakers. She seductively moves her hips as she starts her rendition of Vanessa Williams', "You Would Be My Baby."

AUTUMN

(Singing)

If I had a secret recipe,

You would be my baby

If I had the perfect fantasy,

You would be my baby

If the world was mine to redesign

Then suddenly you would find

That you'd be my baby

If I wrote you poems that made you cry

Would you be my baby

If I say the sweetest lullaby

Would you be my baby...

CUT TO:
EXT. - OUTSIDE AUTUMN’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

Autumn continues singing as Maddie carefully raises her head to take a peek outside one of the living room windows.

AUTUMN (O.S.)

(Singing)

...If I promised you the moon and stars

With heaven waiting in my arms

Would you be my baby...

A close-up shows Maddie rolling her eyes.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Autumn continues to serenade David.

AUTUMN

...But if I only have true love to offer you

Would that be enough to make you want me too?

I would kiss and tuck you in each night

If you would be my baby...

CUT TO:
EXT. - OUTSIDE AUTUMN’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

Maddie searches for an open window to climb into, but doesn't find one.

AUTUMN (O.S.)

...Then I'd watch you sleep and hold you tight

If you would be my baby

I would make you mine for rich or poor

And never need to ask for more...

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

AUTUMN

If you'd be my baby...

CUT TO:
EXT. - OUTSIDE AUTUMN’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

The bluesy musical interlude plays when Maddie finds an open window. She also finds a black bag, hat and bends down to pick up an earring close to the other items. She looks closer to find that the window is unlocked from the inside. She puts the earring in her purse and starts climbing through the window.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Autumn starts to advance on David. He can't help but become fixated by her sensuous performance.

AUTUMN

...If I had a chance at real romance

If I could choose my circumstance

Then you'd be my baby

If I only have true love to offer you

Would that be enough to make you want me too

Autumn leans closer to David.

If I had a secret recipe,

You would be my baby...

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

It's dimly lit as Autumn continues her performance.

AUTUMN (O.S.)

If I had the perfect fanasy,

You would be my baby

If the world was mine to redesign...

Maddie looks around and hears something out of a corner. She spots O'Neil bound and gagged in a chair. She tip toes to O'Neil and helps to untie him.

AUTUMN (O.S.)

...Then suddenly you would find

That you'd be my...

You would be my baby...

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN’S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

AUTUMN

You'd be my baby.

She ends her serenade by kneeling down next to David on the carpet. She touches his thigh and rubs it gently as the music fades.

AUTUMN

So, what do you think?

DAVID

(Looks astonished)

What do I think? I think you're claimin' to be Nancy Kerrigan when you're really Tonya Harding.

AUTUMN

(Not following)

Excuse me?

DAVID

What you did to Maddie was a low blow.

AUTUMN

I was returning the ring.

DAVID

I was right there!

(Pointing over to the fireplace)

Why didn't you give it to me?

AUTUMN

I...

MADDIE (Voice Over, Off Screen)

Can't believe he's choosing this pop tart over me.

DAVID

(Jumps out of his seat)

Maddie!?

MALE VOICE (O.S.)

If you do that again, I'll blow your head off.

DAVID

(To Camera)

I gotta check the batteries on my hearing aid.

He turns around to see Jerry holding a gun.

DAVID

Oh good... I was beginning to think there was something wrong.

CUT TO:
INT. - BERT’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Agnes enters with the research of Haskell and Thorton Limited. Bert is still listening to a voice on the stereo.

AGNES

Here's the last of what I was able to dig up.

(Gives Bert her folder)

Are you ready to pick Jeffrey up from school?

BERT

In a minute.

AGNES

What are you listening to?

BERT

Remember, I told you about Mr. Addison's message? My friend helped unscramble the voice. He put it on tape and FedEx'd it to me not too long ago. The voice sounds familiar, but I still can't figure it out.

AGNES

(Walks closer to the stereo)

Why is she on the tape?

BERT

She? Who’s she?

AGNES

Her. She kept calling here almost every day, remember?

BERT

You mean her?

AGNES

Yeah, I mean her.

(Agnes and Bert slowly look at each other as they put two and two together)

You mean...?

BERT

You mean...?

BERT

Where’s the car keys!?

I thought you had them.

No. I Thought you had them.

AGNES

Where’s the car keys!?

I thought you had them.

No. I Thought you had them.

They run out of the office. A second later, Bert runs back to his desk, opens one of the top drawers, takes out the keys and runs back out the office.

CUT TO:
INT. - AUTUMN'S LIVING ROOM - MINUTES LATER

Autumn and David still have their hands up as Jerry points his gun at them.

AUTUMN

(Leans her head over to David)

Who is he?

DAVID

Meet George Milner, I mean Jerry Parsons. Scott's stockbroker, oops I mean, Haskell and Thorton Limited 's bookkeeper. I'm up to date ain't I, Jerr?

JERRY

Shut up!

DAVID

Shutting up.

(To Autumn)

You never know how uptight people can be when they have a gun in their hand.

MADDIE

That's right, you're shutting up!

DAVID

Yet, for some people, being uptight is their nature.

MADDIE

(She's livid)

You have the nerve to attack me about Ryan while all this time, you've been enjoying a front row seat to your private concert!

DAVID

Maddie –

MADDIE

Don't...!

(Looks over at Jerry)

(V.O.)

Shoot!

Jerry waves his gun to make Maddie join David and Autumn near the sofa.

AUTUMN

Look, if it's about Scott's debt, I'll pay it!

JERRY

Great...! For someone who didn't know you filed for bankruptcy. Besides, that's not why I'm here.

MADDIE

Why is he here, David?

DAVID

I don't know. I didn't invite him.

JERRY

Let me take a stab at it.

DAVID

With a gun?

JERRY

I'm here to make sure Miss Summers signs this.

He takes out a contract from his jacket pocket.

AUTUMN

Sign? Sign what?

DAVID

He wants you to sign away your career to his bosses at Haskell and Thorton. The same people who backed you and Scott in your ill-fated business.

MADDIE

(Looks confused – To David)

How did you...

DAVID

Bertie, filled me in last night.

AUTUMN

(To Herself)

So, this was all a set up.

JERRY

Wow. You got it in record time. You're not as stupid as my boss said you are.

(He walks up to Autumn, puts the gun at her temple and slams the contract on the coffee table)

Sign!

A sound of glass makes Jerry jump, he turns around to see O'Neil, lurking around the Grand Piano area. He was trying to sneak up on Jerry. Jerry puts his hand to his chest.

JERRY

What were you tryin' to do, scare me to death?

David kicks his foot near Jerry's wrist to jar the gun out of his hand, then punches Jerry in the face. Maddie picks up the gun. Jerry puts his hands in the air. Elena and Gabrielle are walking down the stairs to see what is going on. Elena screams in horror. This distracts Maddie. It also lets Jerry wrestles the gun out of her hands.

DAVID

(To Elena – sarcastically)

Nice goin'.

AUTUMN

(Extremely frustrated)

My God! Can you do anything right!?

Jerry turns the gun on both women and makes them walk down the stairs and join the rest of the people who have their arms in the air. As he looks at the two women walking down the stairs, David mouths to O'Neil –

DAVID

Where's Simmons?

O'Neil points up to the ceiling to say he is still upstairs. Jerry points the gun to Autumn's head again.

JERRY

(Snidly)

Now... would you sign, please?

She sneers, but finds there is no other choice but to pick up the pen and sign the contract on several pages. As Jerry checks her signatures as Simmons tip toes down the stairs.

JERRY

(Smug tone in his voice)

It was nice doing business with you.

He turns around to walk out of the room. Simmons attacks him from behind. It sends the gun flying over to O'Neil's direction. The contract falls to the floor. Elena runs over to pick it up. However, Jerry breaks free from Simmons and is closing in on the gun. David lounges to get it before Jerry can get his hands on it. O’Neil had the same thought and beats David to the gun. Unfortunately, O’Neil knocks his boss into Autumn’s piano. David’s head lands squarely on top of the piano. Its legs snap and sends the piano, and David, to the floor.

Jerry tries to regain control of the gun from O’Neil, but Maddie attacks Jerry from behind as she jumps on his back. Autumn wants to help by picking up one of her vases and throws it in Jerry direction. He ducks and it smashes on David who is already unconscious. Seeing this, Autumn runs over to David. O’Neil and Maddie subdues Jerry while Simmons regains control of the gun. Elena stands there like she is frozen.

AUTUMN

Will you call 911 already!

Elena runs over to the phone. Autumn looks down at David.

AUTUMN

David...? David...

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. - DAVID’S HOSPITAL ROOM - EVENING

AUTUMN

David...? are you okay?

DAVID

(Half asleep)

Maddie...? Maddie? Is that you?

Autumn hangs her head down as slowly steps aside to stand next to Gabrielle and Elena. Maddie moves closer to the bed.

MADDIE

David, I’m here. I’m right here.

She clutches on to his hand.

DAVID

The kids. Where are the kids?

MADDIE

They’re at home... waiting for you.

Autumn sees she is the third wheel and prepares to leave.

AUTUMN

I better be going.

Autumn continues to leave the room. Maddie decides to follow her.

DAVID

And where are you going?

MADDIE

I have some unfinished business to take care of.

DAVID

Make sure to keep your hands are below the face.

(Maddie turns around)

She still needs it for a living.

CUT TO:
INT. - HOSPITAL HALLWAY OUTSIDE DAVID’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Maddie swings the door open to see Autumn sitting at a nearby bench. Maddie walks over and sits next to her.

AUTUMN

I’m sorry, Miss Hayes.

MADDIE

For what? Being attracted to an attractive older man? Look, when I said “Been there, done that,” I meant everything... being broke, becoming partners with a man who wanted business and pleasure, and I couldn’t stand David Addison. I don’t know, it’s like watching a movie I’ve already seen and knowing how everything’s going to end. Instead of Scott being your leading man, it was David... again. It kinda scared me.

AUTUMN

If you're leading man had been talking constantly about another woman, a woman he loves more than anything in the world, maybe you do have something to worry about.

(Smiles at Maddie)

I thought because I decided I wanted him, I could get him. We grew up in the same place, we like the same things. I believed it was only a matter of time before he woke up. But when he opened his eyes just now, the first person he wanted to see was you. I knew right then, it was me who had to wake up. I can’t break you two apart.... Don't blame him for losing the ring, Miss Hayes. It was my fault. He almost broke his neck trying to find it.

(Gets up)

Let me get Gabrielle and Elena. We really have to go.

They walk back into David's room.

INT. - DAVID’S HOSPITAL ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Maddie goes straight to David's bed.

MADDIE

Look, David... You go first.

DAVID

Look, Maddie... You go first.

They share a laugh.

DAVID

Honey, I'm sorry. I should have believed you when you said there was nothing going on between you and Ryan.

MADDIE

I was thinking the same thing...

(David looks puzzled.)

About you and Autumn, I mean...

(He still looks puzzled)

What's the matter?

DAVID

I don’t know... It’s been a while since...

He’s looking at Maddie a little harder.

MADDIE

What is it?

DAVID

(Snaps out of it)

Huh?

MADDIE

It looked like you were searching for something.

DAVID

No... It’s just... It's been a while since... I've heard...

(Giving it up)

It's nothing. It's the drugs talking.

AUTUMN

(To Gabrielle and Elena)

C'mon guys, let's go.

Bert and Agnes rush into the room. They are panting to get some air into their lungs.

DAVID

You didn't have to run. There's still plenty of time for you two to visit.

BERT (To Agnes)

Good, she's still here.

MADDIE

Agnes, you sound panicked when you called. What was so urgent for you to come all the way from the office?

DAVID

If you guys wanted Autumn's autograph you should have told me.

BERT

Mr. Addison, I figured out who was behind all this...

(Agnes flashes Bert a glare)

Well, actually, Agnes figured it out.

Maddie sneezes. She looks for some tissue in her purse. She inadvertently takes out the earring she found outside of Autumn's house earlier. She is scanning the room to see who it belongs to and figures it out.

MADDIE

(Whispers)

David, press the button over there.

DAVID

For what?

MADDIE

(Whispers)

Just do it.

David presses the button near his bed.

DAVID

Look Bert, we already know who’s behind this,

(Looks at Camera)

They know who’s behind this,

(Turns back to Bert)

he’s behind bars as we speak.

BERT

Jerry didn’t act on his own. He couldn’t act on his own. He needed orders from the top.

AGNES

What he's trying to say, in his long winded way, is he knows who the real guilty party is.

DAVID

So, where do we find the culprit?

AGNES

You already have.

DAVID

Huh?

AGNES

You’re looking at her!

BERT

You’re looking at her!

DAVID

You!?

AUTUMN

You!?

ELENA

That’s right... me!

GABRIELLE

Elena! Why!

ELENA

Why? This “can’t and won’t sing without my orange juice fresh squeezed first thing in the morning,” mega pain in the ass has got on my last nerve for the last time. As she continued to think how she was owning us, I thought of a way to own her.

As Elena turns away, David presses the button again.

GABRIELLE

Own her? How?

ELENA

My family ties to Haskell and Thorton Limited. My mother’s uncle has a silent yet controlling percentage of the business.

Maddie starts to advance, but Elena pulls out her gun.

GABRIELLE

So, that’s why you begged Scott and Autumn to meet with those company heads to help finance their business.

AUTUMN

Just because I didn’t play nice and comb your hair, you plotted to ruin me?

DAVID

She wanted you to comb her hair?

He continues to press the button without Elena seeing him do it.

ELENA

(To Autumn)

I trusted you. I would have done anything for you, but all you did in return was put me down and humiliate me every chance you got.

(Taking out the contract and looking at it)

Once I give this to my lawyers, it's all gonna change.

(She moves over to the door)

I can't wait to see how it feels when you have to fetch my bottled water.

Elena prepares to leave as the nurse barrels through the door. The force knocks Elena to the floor and it sends her gun over to the wastebasket. Maddie goes over to pick it up.

NURSE

(Looks nervous)

Is everything alright, Mr. Addison?

DAVID

I was wondering if Jello was on tonight's menu.

Maddie shakes her head as she takes the contract from Elena and gives it to Autumn. With a relieved look on her face, Autumn tears it up.

FADE OUT.
END OF ACT FOUR
- 4 MIN. COMMERCIAL BREAK -
TAG
FADE IN:
INT. - MADDIE’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

David opens her door and walks in.

DAVID

So?

MADDIE

So?

DAVID

So, when do we do it?

MADDIE

Wasn’t twice last night enough?

DAVID

I'm talking about our new L.A. branch. Are you ready?

MADDIE

We're doing this today?

DAVID

Wanna reschedule?

MADDIE

No. Our new employees should get a heads up on what they are in for.

(Knocking on the door.)

Come in.

AGNES

(Opens door)

Miss Hayes, Mr. Addison, Autumn’s here to see you.

MADDIE

Send her in.

Agnes lets the door swing wider so Autumn can walk in.

DAVID

Where’s your overdressed shadow?

AUTUMN

I’m giving Gabrielle a day off.

DAVID

Taking off the leash, I see. It’s not the only sense that's working today. I also heard a certain someone spitting out her bubble gum.

AUTUMN

I want to see what I can create for my next album. I'm using my ideas for a change.

Knocking on the door.

MADDIE

Come in, Mrs. Viola.

VOICE (O.S.)

Can I come in too?

MADDIE

Ryan?

DAVID

Either that or we’ve just completed the world’s fastest sex change operation.

Ryan opens the door and walks in.

RYAN

I’ve been thinking about what you said... a lot... and you’re right. When I’m on a project, I have to stick to it regardless of what’s going on around me.

David walks over to Ryan.

DAVID

Listen, If I made the atmosphere around here form icicles on your nose, I apologize.

RYAN

Thanks, Mr. Addison, but you didn’t need to say that, really.

DAVID

Now you tell me. I'll just have to recycle what I said the next time Miss Hayes gives me the cold shoulder.

Autumn walks toward Ryan.

AUTUMN

Are you married?

RYAN

No.

AUTUMN

Have a girlfriend?

RYAN

No.

AUTUMN

Wanna have lunch?

RYAN

Absolutely.

AUTUMN

Great! Gabrielle should be meeting with us at the restaurant.

DAVID

Us?

MADDIE

Us?

VOICE (O.S.)

Autumn, are you ready?

Scott walks in.

AUTUMN

I’ll be out in a sec.

She squeezed his hand before he disappears behind the door again.

AUTUMN

I decided to take a scene out of your movie, Miss Hayes.

DAVID

Oh yeah, which movie is this, Miss Hayes?

MADDIE

The one with subtitles.

Autumn walks over to hug Maddie and David.

AUTUMN

I hope we don’t become strangers.

DAVID

We don't have to. Put us on retainer, we'll be best buddies.

AUTUMN

(Looks at Ryan)

Come.

She leads him out of the room.

DAVID

I bet he’s thinking, “Right word, right girl, wrong time.”

MADDIE

Speaking of which...

(She takes out a set of handcuffs from her second drawer)

I assume you had something to do with this.

DAVID

I had to make sure that the right words, with the right girl, always comes out at the right time.

He winks at her. She returns it with a smile. They both hear another knock on the door.

DAVID

Enter.

Agnes opens the door and enters the room again.

AGNES

It's almost time for you to go and meet your new employees.

MADDIE

We'll be leaving in a minute, Agnes.

DAVID

(He puts his hand on Agnes’ shoulder)

So, Agnes DiPesto Viola, you’ve solved the Autumn Summers case. What are you plannin' do next?

AGNES

Well, Bert and I are planning to take Jeffrey to Disneyland.

MADDIE

(Sarcastically)

What a surprise!

DAVID

(To Maddie)

I knew you were gonna say that.
